…Experiencing Polar Art
I’ll have to be truthfully blunt about this event. I think it sounds like a yawner. But my assistant, who is (another blunt truth) a bit of a nerd, says it sounds fabulous to her. So I’m humoring here, and checking this out…
Life isn’t just one medium, and neither is Ice Counterpoint: Encounters in Antarctica and the Arctic, a multimedia presentation with music, video, art, sounds and photos inspired by the extreme conditions of the Earth’s polar regions. The exhibit has already premiered Terry Mizesko’s new composition for soprano, flute, viola, and harp. Add to it some of the area’s best artists, and you have artistic collaboration at its finest.
A great part of Ice Counterpoint is presented by UNC’s own Brooks de Wetter-Smith. He sailed to Antarctica with National Geographic, and was truly able to capture the unique beauty of Antarctica as a musician, but also as a photographer. Wetter-Smith joined another local artist – Nerys Levy – on another trip to the Arctic region. Sit back and breath in the Nerys Levy “plein air” paintings of the landscape.
This exhibit is about beauty, but also about preserving the natural environment and reducing the effects of climate change. You know, I’ve just about decided that this isn’t such a yawner afterall!
Ice Counterpoints: Encounters in Antarctica and the Arctic, can be seen at the Fedex Global Education Center, 302 Pittsboro Street in Chapel Hill. It will be presented through May 31, 2010.
Happy April!
